WE WILL WALK
Filmed on-location in downtown Chicago and rural Kenya, two women from vastly different circumstances carry a yellow bucket of water through their respective landscapes.
“Be Hope to Her” (BH2O+) is a nationwide event hosted by NURU INTERNATIONAL designed to raise awareness about the need for clean water. With a yellow bucket on your head, participants journey to a water source, fill a yellow bucket and walk back as if they were providing a day’s worth of water for your family—just as millions of women and girls do across the globe every day. This project was featured in an article on the ONE CAMPAIGN blog.
A NEW DECADE IN RACIAL RECONCILIATION
A conversation with Bill Hybels (Senior Pastor, Willow Creek Community Church) and Hector Hermosillo (Lead Pastor, Casa De Luz) who reflect on the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and what it means to be a radically inclusive in 2010.
MOTION GRAPHICS: A Fire Inside
Bjorn Amundsen and I worked together developing this concept piece to introduce Student Impact’s series titled A FIRE INSIDE. The tricky thing about these kinds of videos is that people have to watch them multiple times and be engaged every single time. After the first showing an audience member was hear saying, “That video was awesome! I’m gonna come back next week just to see THAT again.” Success! Sound design was courtesy of 4K Sound and really brings the piece to life. You can view the companion print materials in my GRAPHICS PORTFOLIO.
COMEDIC SHORT: The Discipline of Flossing
This original short tells the story of a odd young man who absolutely loves flossing his teeth. The quirky habit ends up saving his life in a series of fortunate events (see corresponding branding in GRAPHICS portfolio).
This video was created as part of my role at Student Impact (a church youth group). Production took place in a single day with a budget of $300 with no professional crew. We shot on an HVX200 with a wide-angle adapter and Spider-dolly for the tracking shots. Besides the fact that it was 90 degrees outside, it was a fun little project.
DEEP, DARK, SECRET
Of all the projects I’ve worked on, this was the most emotionally difficult. That’s because it’s about my wife. There are times in life when you know that you have to do something, you aren’t exactly “excited” about it, but you know that something GOOD will come of it if you are brave enough to step into the unknown.
It has been exciting to see the impact this story has had, since my wife was brave enough to share it. Countless emails, mostly late at night, from women (and men) who have experienced the same thing that she did and were encouraged that some else knows what it feels like.
This documentary short was a personal project of mine. I used a mini-dv camera and spent around $400 total. Soundtrack by: Nathan Yaccino.
NURU HARVEST Ep. 6
My good friend Doug Scott, shot me an email this past spring asking if I’d like to fly to Kenya this summer to shoot NURU INTERNATIONAL’S Episode 6 featuring the harvest of the maize crop and the drilling of several wells at primary schools. The 6 days I spent filming the work of NURU in the Kuria District of Kenya was a blast. Most days I was on my own with “Boda” driver (motorcycle taxi) Charles and my assistant Sammy who performed every job from sound man to translator to camera assistant. We ate in 100% local restaurants where live chickens were as welcome inside as patrons. After I returned home to the US, I handed off the footage to Randy Warren (editor) and Doug Scott (producer) who assembled this great piece.
MUSIC VIDEO: Lamborghinis and Bentleys
This July Student impact took 800 high schoolers to camp in southern Illinios. When you’re away with this many kids, you’ve got to have a few rules. In case you were born before the 80′s and can’t understand rap lyrics: the songs is about the “FOUR M’s” of camp: MEALS, MEETINGS, MACKING, and MODESTY. You gotta respect the rules!
This was produced with $300 and alot of favors.
ONLY GOD: Willow Creek
In celebration of Willow Creek’s 33rd Anniversary, this piece captures the life-changing experiences of individual “Creek-ers” over the three decades. We wanted to present the archival photos in a way that fit a bit more organically into the interview scene – the “hovering” graphical timeline was our solution.
ONE CAMPAIGN: Amazing Grace
In 2008, I was privileged to work with the ONE Campaign to develop a video resource for their national ONE SABBATH event. ONE SABBATH is a day when faith communities of all backgrounds gather to address the issues of global health and poverty.
My friend, producer Justin Bell and I created this video set to a modern arrangement of the traditional hymn “Amazing Grace” esigned to lead the congregation through a collective worship moment with or without the assistance of a live band or on-stage vocalist(s). Our goal was to develop a piece that was simple enough to feel at home in an Anglican Sunday service, yet with enough of a current edge to it that any mega-church could include it in their weekly gathering.
Music by Nate Yaccino. Photos compliments of Al Buschauer & the ONE Campaign.
