<p><strong>Today, my wife and I went exploring at our local county flea market. </strong> I dont usually expect to find something for myself.  It&#8217;s typically furniture or nic-nacky type things that we buy.  But this time I found this killer tweed briefcase made by <a href="http://www.hartmann.com/default.asp" target="_blank">Hartmann Luggage</a>!  I don&#8217;t really know how old it is but everything on their site is in the hundred&#8217;s of dollars.  After haggling a bit, I walked away with this hipster briefcase for $35.</p>
<p>I was super excited to get home and customize it to safely carry my MacBook Pro.  I thought about ordering a custom foam insert for it, but my wife encouraged me to try to build it myself out of the packaging that came from Apple with the laptop originally.  Turns out: that was a genius idea! Here&#8217;s what I did&#8230;<span id="more-2784"></span></p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">STEP 1: FIND ORIGINAL MACBOOK BOX</span></h3>
<p>As you can see, the size of the Hartmann case and the original Apple packaging are very similar.  I totally lucked-out on this.</p>
<p><a href="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_01.jpg"><img title="Briefcase_01" src="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_01.jpg" alt="" width="610" height="456" /></a></p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">STEP 2: REMOVE PLASTIC INSERT FROM RETAIL BOX AND PLACE INSIDE BRIEFCASE.</span></h3>
<p>The custom-molded plastic insert makes a sturdy holder for the the laptop and even provides ample space for the power charger and miscellaneous adapters beneath it.  However, this insert was somewhat smaller than the interior of the briefcase so I cut some 1&#8243; thick strips of foam to fill in the gaps.  I had some foam lying around from some other packages I&#8217;ve received in the past so I didn&#8217;t need to buy anything new for this.</p>
<p><a href="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_01.jpg"></a><a href="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_05.jpg"><img title="Briefcase_05" src="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_05.jpg" alt="" width="610" height="456" /></a></p>
<p>Rather than cutting the foam to fit squarely at the corners, I decided to curve it.  This way there can&#8217;t be any shifting or misalignment of the foam at this &#8220;high impact&#8221; position.  (I feel like a total nerd saying that, but it&#8217;s true).  Also you&#8217;ll notice that I left the long plastic tab attached to the plastic insert.  This is to help remove the laptop each time (I just pull up on the tab), since the plastic is so tightly fitting.</p>
<p><a href="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_05.jpg"></a><a href="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_06.jpg"><img title="Briefcase_06" src="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_06.jpg" alt="" width="410" height="306" /></a></p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">STEP 3: INSERT LAPTOP</span></h3>
<p>This is the fun part.  Looks great &#8211; the tab sticks out a little farther than I would have liked but it&#8217;s totally necessary so I&#8217;ll deal.</p>
<p><a href="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_06.jpg"></a><a href="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_03.jpg"><img title="Briefcase_03" src="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_03.jpg" alt="" width="610" height="456" /></a><a href="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_04.jpg"><img title="Briefcase_04" src="http://jesseoxford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Briefcase_04.jpg" alt="" width="610" height="456" /></a></p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">STEP 4: ADD THIN FOAM COVER OVER LAPTOP LID</span></h3>
<p>We don&#8217;t want any scratches on the lid of the MacBook, so I peeled the foam out of the top of the retail box.  This was a bit tricky since it was attached with spray adhesive, but if you take your time it will come loose with some gentle pulling.  Now I can use all the pockets in the briefcase lid without having to worry about scratching my precious laptop.</p>

<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">STEP 5: GET TO WORK!</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 13px;">I&#8217;m totally pumped to rock this thing to some meetings next week.  I&#8217;ll look professional AND stylish without having to have spent a grand to pay for this sweet set-up.</span></p>
